Post Op Care
If you feel your animal may be experiencing difficulty after surgery, re-checks are available (and encouraged!). Please call the clinic at 608 -224-1400 to schedule an appointment. *Rechecks within 7 days of surgery are at no cost; rechecks beyond 7 days are just $10. Additional medications, tests, etc will be an additional cost.
Please notify WCVC or your regular veterinarian if any of the following occurs:
-
Loss of appetite for more than two days.
-
Refusal to drink water for more than one day.
-
Depression, lethargy, weakness or pain
-
Vomiting after the first 24 hours following surgery.
-
Diarrhea for more than 24 hours.
Diet
-
Feed a small amount the evening after surgery. You may resume your pets regular diet the morning after surgery.
Activity
-
Restrict exercise. No running/jumping for 10-14 days.
-
High-energy dogs should be leash-walked and kenneled if not closely monitored.
Incision
-
Watch the incision for swelling, redness or drainage. Do not apply anything to the incision.
-
Do not allow your pet to lick at the incision.
-
Sutures are absorbable. They are buried and dissolve over time.
-
Keep the incision and your pet clean and dry.
Pain
-
Your pet has been medicated for pain before surgery, and will receive medication to be given at home. Please follow the dosing and instructions carefully.
-
Do not give your pet any over the counter pain
-
medicine. It is unsafe for use in many cases, but especially following surgery.
-
If you feel that your pet is still exceptionally painful after the 3 (three) days of take home medication is gone, please call the clinic.
Feral Cats
-
Must be kept confined at indoor temperatures (60 to 70 degrees F) for 48 hours before being re-released.
-
Be sure that they are eating and drinking before release.
Did you know....??
All surgery patients receive a small green tattoo to show they have already been spayed/neutered? The purpose of this tattoo is to prevent unnecessary surgeries in the future.
